The Power of Focus
Focus is a deceptively powerful word. In essence, it allows us to do more with less. When you introduce constraints in to your life, you find you must make decisions.
When we focus on the present moment, we allow ourselves to fully enjoy the sights, the smells, and the people we’re with. We can literally stop, and smell a rose. And we can think about that rose and enjoy that particular moment.
Seven months ago, I stopped wearing a watch. I was used to wearing one every day for almost eights years. After getting past the initial stage of checking my empty wrist, I feel more in tune with my surroundings. I'm not thinking about where I will be in exactly forty three minutes, I just enjoy being where I am at that moment.
Focus isn’t about blocking out the world and only doing one thing at a time. Focus is about making decisions, choosing to engage in the things that bring us happiness.
People resist making decisions. We don’t like to be the one responsible when something goes wrong. But as we chip away at this fear, we begin to accept uncertainty. There is beauty in the idea of not knowing if something will work out. Ask yourself, "what is the worst that can happen?"
Focus has helped me write more, do more, and believe more. By giving myself constraints, I’m making myself responsible for my decisions. I’m accepting uncertainty. I’m enjoying the moment, the smells, the flops, the successes, the leap of faith, the bridge, and yes, even the occasional rose.
