The Secret of Greatness

Many people aspire for greatness. Especially in business, entrepreneurs are constantly dreaming of the next massive success. But, doing it for the wrong reasons won't lead you to your desired destinations.

Michael Jackson didn't strive for perfection because he wanted to sell more albums, he wanted to create the best music possible. Similarly, Michael Jordan wasn't the greatest at basketball because he wanted more shoe deals, it was because he wanted to be the best basketball player.

In other words, greatness in sports, music, business, art etc. isn't the goal, it is the result. Mark Zuckerberg didn't code Facebook as an undergrad because he wanted to be a billionaire, he wanted to connect with friends and make something awesome. I could continue with more examples, but you get the point.

Do what you love. Follow your passion. Become the best you can possibly be and then some--and maybe, just maybe--you'll be recognized for your work. You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take. If you fail to ask, the answer will always be no.

Greatness is a journey with many hurdles and setbacks. If it were easy, everyone would shoot the game winning shot, or send a crowd on their feet calling for an encore. Don't fear being humbled. Learn from your mistakes.
